Bible Syllable Cards
Counting syllables is a fun skill that gets young learners in the habit of listening for sounds in words. Although it isn’t absolutely vital for beginning readers {like knowing letter sounds or blending sounds in words}, I would argue that the skill helps kids as they spell longer words.
Note: Every card has the word at the bottom. The word is simply there so you’ll know what each picture represents.
One easy activity you can do with your young learners is to sort the cards by the number of syllables they have. For example, 1-syllable words include cross, fish, and bread. 2-syllable words include Pharaoh, Moses, and Noah. 3-syllable words include disciples, Goliath, and miracle. {See the image below.}
Eleven cards are included in the pack for 1-syllable, 2-syllable, and 3-syllable words. Also included in the pack is a Syllable Counting Mat. Your child can use small objects like math counters, coins, dried beans, or old game pieces to help them count the syllables in the words.
If you find that your child struggles to count the syllables in the word, here are a few tips to try:
- Say it like a robot. (No – ah)
- Sing the word. Or you can pretend like you’re hollering out the door to call the dog in. (Nooo- ahhh)
- Feel your chin drop. Ask your child to put their hand under their chin to feel it drop for each syllable.
- Look in a mirror as you say it. This can help your child see when they drop their chin for each syllable.
Along with counting syllables, you can use the cards as a Bible teaching moment.
For example, after the cards have been sorted, go through a few cards and ask, “Goliath. Can you remember a Bible story about Goliath?” {David and Goliath} “Bread. Can you remember a time that bread is used or mentioned in a Bible story?” {When Jesus broke bread with his disciples or when he blessed the bread and fish and fed the multitude.}
