Well, it’s finally here…the next Phonics by The Book lesson! Masaru of Christian Clip Arts has worked so hard to create ALL NEW clip art for this lesson! If you’re new to this curriculum, please click on any of the images at the very bottom of this post to find past lessons.
*This is a series I originally posted YEARS ago on This Reading Mama. This is why some of the images have the This Reading Mama watermark on them. My goal is to revise it and add more to it. But for now, I’m just moving it to its new home here.

This past week, my son (currently starting 2nd grade) worked on the lesson just a little bit. We’re still on a “lite” schedule for school, so we didn’t do all the activities. Plus, the lesson was a little too easy for him. But it still served as a good review.
Long Vowel Bible Readers: Silent e Review
The reader, entitled Samuel Listens to God, retells the story of the prophet Samuel from 1 Samuel, chapters 1-16 while reviewing the a_e, i_e, 0_e and u_e patterns. The vocabulary is controlled and between the sight words and phonics patterns, it is mostly kept on a 1st grade level (Harder words are listed on the first page of the reader). The length of the text is longer than a typical 1st grade reader, so if your child struggles with this, you can:
- share the reading (you read a page, he reads a page)
- only focus on 2 pages a day
- read aloud to him the first couple of days and gradually ask him to start reading more each day

Little Words
He spelled little words from Samuel. The printable activity gives you a list of words to ask your child to spell. The fun thing about this activity is that you keep the entire word {Samuel} a secret until the end.
I Spy Sight Words
We tried something a little different. While cleaning out the school room this summer, he spotted our magnifying glass and has been asking to play with it ever since.
So, I made the sight words really small in the picture above. He had to find them with the magnifying glass and write the 10 words below, then read them off to me. He kept saying, “These are ‘baby’ words.” So, I challenged him to find each word, only look at it once, then spell the words below without looking again. He did a great job with this and it provided the extra push he needed. 🙂
Word Hunt
One of my favorite activities with word study is word hunting through the text. {We always put the pages of the text in plastic sleeve protectors and then into a 3-ring binder so we can mark over the text.}
He used four different colored dry erase markers (one for a_e words, one for i_e words, etc.) and searched for the long vowel patterns in the text. We don’t do this on every page. Maybe just 2-3 pages. Another great idea is to ask your child to write down the words he’s found in the text, like we did in this lesson. {He did not write down the words this time.}

Oh I am so happy to see more Read By the Book books. My oldest is in second grade and actually just finished the All About Reading lesson on v-e words. She loves reading Bible stories and these are a perfect fit for her reading ability.
