Today, I am excited to post lesson 2 of Unit 2 for my Phonics by The Book beginning reader curriculum.
*This is a series I originally posted YEARS ago on This Reading Mama. My goal is to revise it and add more to it. But for now, I’m just moving it to its new home here.

Lesson 2 of Unit 2 focuses on the story of Joshua’s leadership as the Israelites destroy Jericho (taken from Deuteronomy 31, Joshua 1-6). The phonics skill is the long i (i_e) pattern.
There is a 5-day Lesson Outline for all the activities, plus writing prompts and ideas for each day.
Also included is a phonics reader (ALuv REALLY got into the story this week. It was fun to see.)
Phonics and Sight Word Activities/Games such as:
Long i pattern sort-most words are pulled directly from the reader
Spin a Pattern (with patterns from the sort)
A-“maze”-ing Sight Words
I Spy Sight Words-find the hidden words in the picture
and several more! If you’re unsure how to implement any of these activities, the posts from Unit 1, Lesson 1 and Unit 2, Lesson 2 will probably be most helpful. But if you’ve been using these lessons with your child, the activities included will already be familiar.
