Winter = Dry, Cracked Hands
For many, many winters now, my dry, cracked, and bleeding hands have been quite the nuisance. It was to the point that I had to constantly make sure my hands weren’t bleeding, especially when I was out in public. Oh, how embarassing!
In past years, I had bought and used over-the-counter lotions and ointments, but often they irritated and burned my skin.
Last year, I began using johoba oil on my hands, especially before bed. And while it did bring relief from the cracking, the old, dry skin on my hands still remained. It was to the point that my kids hated it when I touched their arm or face. My touch was always met with, “Mom, your hands feel like sand paper. Ugh.”
I needed something that could actually exfoliate the dead skin off my hands, especially if I wanted the johoba oil to really absorb into my skin. I was going to show you a picture of the palms of my hands before using sugar scurb, but I’ll spare you the awful picture.
Homemade Hand Sugar Scrub
A friend of mine has a teenage daughter who began selling sugar scrub. She was completely out when I asked to buy one, which made me think, “I wonder if I could make a homemade hand sugar srub myself!”
I’m happy to report that my teenage daughter and I worked together to create something that makes my hands feel dreamy, even in the middle of winter! That’s a HUGE win in my book!
1. Here’s how we whipped it up in less than 5 minutes*…
- 1 cup of sugar – I used unbleached, cane sugar
- a little less than 1/3 cup of olive oil
- 15-20 drops of johoba oil
- maybe half a teaspoon of local honey
2. Mix ingredients all together and store in a glass jar for up to two monts in an airtight container. {I used an empty jelly jar from our cabinet.}
3. To use, just scoop out about 1/2 a tablespoon. Rub over hands for at least 30 seconds, then rinse off with water. I recommend scrubbing your hands right before you go to bed. You can also take out about a tablespoon and scrub your feet with your hands. Yep, two birds with one stone. Just be careful, as it will make your feet slippery!
*Ways to change it up:
- If all you have is bleached white sugar, I’m sure it will work just as well.
- You can use coconut oil instead of olive oil.
- Skip the johoba oil if you don’t have any.
- Skip the honey. Honey is great for healing open sores, so I wouldn’t suggest this.
- You can add 10-15 lavendar drops.
Note: The olive oil will begin to absorb more of the sugar over time. It is helpful to add a little bit of sugar back to your jar and give it a good stir when this happens.
A few more quick tips for dry skin:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Wear gloves when washing the dishes or cleaning the house.
- Avoid super hot water in the shower or when washing hands.
- Avoid using soaps or cleaners with loads of chemicals.
