Grid games are wonderful for several reasons!
1- Grid games reinforce one-to-one correspondence as learners count the dots on the die and trace that many letters on the board.
2- Grid games give learners practice subitizing. Subitizing is the ability to see a group of objects, like dots on a die, and group them instead of counting each one. This is a harder skill, but one that kids will need as they get deeper into math.
3- Grid games help with early reading skills, like moving left to right while reading the words and then the return sweep to the next line.
4- Grid games integrate fine motor skills as learners trace each letter.
FREE Handwriting Grid Games
If you’re looking for a fun way to get your child(ren) to practice handwriting for both uppercase AND lowercase letters, check out these free handwriting grid games. One game is included for uppercase letters, and one grid game is included for lowercase letters.
The only thing you’ll need to play is a die. If however, you would like this to be something your learner(s) can play multiple times, be sure to slip the page into a dry erase pocket, than use dry erase marker to trace the letters.
To Play: Learners roll a die. If they roll a three, for example, learners should trace three letters on the grid, which would be a, b, and c. Learners roll the die again. If they roll a two this time, learners trace two more letters, which would be d and e. Learners keep rolling and tracing until all 26 letters have been traced.
With each letter, they should begin their first stroke at the green star. Enjoy!
